MOT Test FAQs
Q. How soon can you get me in?
Our online booking system books you straight into your local test centre, so if you're in a hurry, you can book your MOT for today - right up until the appointment time.
Q. How long does the MOT test take?
The MOT test takes 45 minutes, however please allow up to an hour in case any minor repairs are needed. Please arrive at least 5 minutes before the start of the test (you can bring your car in any time from opening onwards).
Q. What types of vehicle do you MOT?
We can MOT:
- Cars (Class 4)
- Class 7 Vehicles (vehicles in the 3.0 to 3.5 tonne weight range, including vans, pickups and transits)
See the full list of centres here: Class 7 MOT test centres
Unfortunately we cannot MOT three-wheeled vehicles or motorcycles in any of our test centres.
Q. What's checked in the MOT?
The MOT is designed to check that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. See our Advice Centre for the full MOT checklist.
You should be aware that the MOT certificate is not a guarantee of the general mechanical condition of your car - you should have your car serviced regularly to maintain its mechanical condition.
Q. What can I do to make sure my car passes its MOT?
Many MOT failures we see every day could be prevented by drivers carrying out some simple checks before bringing their vehicle in. Common avoidable faults include light bulbs, tyre condition and pressure, mirrors, wipers and washers. See our tips on how to make sure your car passes its MOT first time.
Q. What happens if my car fails the MOT test?
If your car fails the MOT, it must be repaired and retested. You cannot legally drive your car on the road until the repairs have been made and a certificate issued. Most repairs can be carried out onsite at the test centre on the same day, and we will always advise you upfront about any work that needs to be done.
Q. Is there a charge for a retest?
If we are able to repair your car ourselves at the test centre, or off-site by the following day, there is no retest fee. If your car is removed from the test centre and returned to us within 10 working days, the cost for the retest will be half of the initial VOSA MOT test fee charged. In all other cases a full MOT test is required and will be charged at the current rate. Please see our Terms and Conditions for full details.
Q. What if I disagree with the decision?
If your vehicle fails the MOT test and you wish to appeal against it you should ask the MOT testing station for a VT17 form. If your appeal is successful the fee or part of it will be returned, but you should not have your vehicle repaired before the appeal is considered as any change may affect the outcome of the appeal.
