DPF Cleaning at Halfords Autocentres

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) were developed to meet ongoing changes in emissions regulations and particulate filters in diesel car exhausts are now as common as catalytic converters on petrol cars. This relatively new way to combat vehicle pollution has proven to be very successful in providing major reductions to diesel exhaust emissions, but, as with any new technology, sometimes there can be problems.
The harmful exhaust soot starts building up on the walls of the filter and gradually increases back pressure in the exhaust system reducing performance and fuel efficiency. To keep the system clean a process called 'regeneration' is used. This is when the exhaust temperature rises to 600 degrees centigrade, and burns off the soot.
However there are many different factors such as the type of fuel used, driving styles, age of vehicle and the type of oil used that can all prevent the regeneration process from working properly. In these cases the car will lose performance and most likely a warning sign will illuminate on the dashboard to alert the driver of a problem. On some makes of car the car will switch into 'limp mode' which will restrict performance to prevent any other damage until the fault is rectified.
DPF systems are very expensive costing on average between £1,000 to £1,500 to replace, and forced regeneration in a workshop will also be time consuming and costly. A BBC Watchdog program in 2011 highlighted the DPF problem featuring many drivers with bills ranging from hundreds to thousands of pounds.
Because of problems faced by our customers we have sourced some very effective DPF maintenance products to help keep your car running smoothly. We have two types of treatments depending upon the seriousness of the current DPF fault.
DPF Maintenance Clean
For filters starting to see a build-up of soot
If a diagnostic check identifies that the DPF is starting to get blocked or you notice a gradual decrease in performance then the regular maintenance product can be used which should reduce the build up after driving for 20 to 30 miles under normal driving conditions.
Then regular use of the maintenance product every six months should help to keep the DPF clear of a soot build up.
DPF Deep Clean
For filters completely blocked
If it has got to the stage where the filter is completely blocked and a manual regeneration does not clear it or only clears it temporarily then a complete clean is the only solution, other than changing the DPF which will be costly. This will require us to inject a special cleaning agent in the DPF to clean it out, or in some circumstances remove the filter and soak it overnight before refitting.
If it gets to the stage of requiring this then we recommend regular cleansing to reduce the chance of it happening again.
The DPF cleaners have been extensively tested to confirm that they are suitable for all diesel engines and diesel fuels. The tests also showed that it was very effective at cleaning blocked Diesel Particulate Filters under normal driving conditions.
There have been numerous customer endorsements of the product when the DPF warning lights have been on and diagnostics show ash content well over 50%. After adding the treatment to the vehicle and driving for around 30 miles it clears the system completely and the warning light goes out.
As the treatments clear out the DPF it makes the car run much smoother so you will feel the difference if it was heavily clogged up and it will improve the car fuel economy as well.
Any diesel car can be susceptible to the DPF having a build-up of soot, especially those mainly driven around town on short or low speed journeys. So to avoid expensive repairs bills and keep the car running smoothly and more efficiently book in for a treatment.
Halfords Autocentres' Guarantee
In the unlikely event that either of the DPF treatments do not work we will deduct the cost of the treatments from the final bill to rectify the problem.
