Summer can be a tough time for your car - long journeys, heavy loads and hot tarmac can spell disaster if you're unprepared. Keep safe on the roads and save money at the pump this summer with these simple car care tips.

Six Steps to safe summer driving

1. Prepare your tyres

Planning a UK break this summer? If you're hoping to take the car, you'll need to prepare your tyres before you hit the road.

The easiest thing to check is your tyre pressure. Driving at high speeds generates more heat, and travelling with a heavier load on hot tarmac can pose a serious risk if your tyres are inflated incorrectly.

Wet roads can be just as dangerous for unsafe tyres - low tread means less grip on slippery surfaces. For peace of mind, book a Free Tyre Check with Halfords Autocentres today.

2. Use it or lose it

It may sound silly, but running your car's air con in the winter and heating in the summer could save you a lot of money in the long run. By regularly running these systems, you'll keep the parts primed and the seals lubricated, avoiding the cost of replacement later down the line.

If you air conditioning system isn't working as it should, get it serviced. Our Air Con Service costs just £49.

3. Protect against pollen

If you suffer from hay fever, you know how distracting the symptoms can be. Driving with itchy eyes, a runny nose and frequent sneezing can be dangerous. Taking a few precautionary steps to improve the quality of air in your car is a sensible move when pollen levels are at their highest.

Insulate your car, clean and change both the pollen and cabin filters regularly, and use plastic car mats instead of cloth ones. This will help to reduce moisture retention, keeping allergens at bay.

Try our Air Conditioning Antibacterial Clean. It removes 99.9% of bacteria and bad smells from your system, greatly improving the air quality in your car.

4. Test your battery

Did you know that a hot summer can be worse for your car battery than a cold winter?

High temperatures and longer journeys can put your battery through its paces, particularly if you're charging phones, tablets and other electronics while travelling.

If your battery is more than a few years old, book a Free Battery Check at Halfords Autocentres. Our experienced technicians will determine whether it's charging properly, and let you know if it does need replacing.

5. Keep your engine cool

Much like your car battery, hotter weather means a hotter engine, which can result in problems if left unchecked.

Your car's cooling system works much harder in the summer months, so it is essential to keep your coolant at the right strength and level to avoid overheating. If you're unsure, pop in for a coolant change before you set off.

6. Right oil, right car

Checking your engine oil is an essential part of car maintenance no matter what time of year. However, it's even more important in summer when your car is under more strain than usual.

Choosing the right oil for your car is just as important. Book a service with Halfords Autocentres and expect quality, fully synthetic oil as standard.
